PDF sewing pattern · Structured zip-top backpack · Intermediate · Full-size printable pattern pieces · Instant download — no physical item shipped
Four colour blocks means four fabrics — which means this is the bag that finally uses the canvas remnants you've been keeping because they were too good to throw away and too small to be anything.
It's a proper structured rucksack, not a soft sack. A flat base that lets it stand up on its own, a wide zip across the top that opens the whole bag rather than a narrow slot, padded webbing shoulder straps, a grab handle at the top, and a zip pocket on the front for the things you need without taking it off.
The colour-block panelling isn't just decorative — it's what makes this pattern beginner-friendly at the cutting stage. Every panel is a simple rectangle. There are no curved seams in the body at all.
Intermediate because of the zip and the strap assembly, not because of the shaping.

🛍️ Materials Needed
- Sewing machine able to handle canvas — a walking foot helps
- Heavy-duty or denim needles
- Printer and paper, or a copyshop print
- Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
- Clips — pins will not go through waxed canvas cleanly
- Iron and a pressing cloth (waxed canvas cannot take direct heat)
⚙️ How It Works
- Download instantly. Your files arrive the moment your order is confirmed — nothing is shipped.
- Print at 100%. Check the test square, then cut your panels, lining and interfacing.
- Build the panels. Join the colour blocks into the front and back, add the pocket zip.
- Assemble and finish. Set the top zip, attach the straps and handle, drop in the lining, and it's done.
