Seven hexagons make a flower: one centre, six petals around it. Surround it with a ring of background hexagons, and repeat.
This is the Grandmother's Flower Garden — one of the oldest and best-loved quilt designs there is. It's made by hand with English paper piecing: fabric wrapped round paper hexagon templates and whip-stitched together. No machine needed, and every piece fits in a pocket.
That's why it's the quilt people make on the sofa, on the train, on holiday — one rosette at a time, over months. The finished quilt keeps the scalloped hexagon edge instead of being trimmed straight.
