PDF sewing pattern · Quilted chicken oven mitt · Confident beginner · Full-size printable templates · Instant download — no physical item shipped

It sits on the counter like a little hen. Then you slide your hand in through the base and pick up a hot dish with it.

That double life is why people make these in sets. On the counter, it's decoration — a plump quilted hen with a stuffed comb, a fanned tail and a quilted wing. In use, the whole body is a mitt: your hand goes in through the opening underneath, and the insulated layers sit between your palm and the heat.

The comb, wattle and tail feathers are small stuffed pieces caught in the seams, so they stand up and give the hen her shape. The wing is a separate quilted panel stitched on top. A loop at the back hangs it on a hook by the oven.

A few fat quarters, a scrap of insulating batting and a weekend. Make one to match every kitchen you know.

⚙️ How It Works

  1. Download instantly. Your files arrive the moment your order is confirmed — nothing is shipped.
  2. Make the small pieces first. Comb, wattle and tail feathers — sewn, turned and lightly stuffed.
  3. Layer and assemble the body. Outer fabric, insulated batting and lining, with the small pieces caught in the seams.
  4. Add the wing and finish. Quilt the wing, stitch it on, add the eyes and the hanging loop.

This is a digital PDF sewing pattern — an instant download, not a finished oven mitt and not a kit. No physical item will be shipped. All sales are final once the files have been downloaded. Personal use and small-scale handmade selling are welcome; the pattern files, photos and instructions may not be resold, shared or redistributed.

Safety note: heat protection depends entirely on the materials you use. Always use insulated heat-resistant batting as specified, test your finished mitt before handling hot cookware, and never use a damp mitt.
