Four pattern pieces and a binding. There's no facing, no lining to bag out, no zip and no buttonhole — every raw edge is bound in a contrast strip, which is what gives the vest its outline and takes it from "quilted rectangle" to something with a line.
Because it's quilted through and bound on both sides, it's reversible: quilt a print to a plain and you have two vests. It goes over a shirt in spring, under a coat in winter, and it's the fastest garment in the catalogue.
