A coat, not a jacket. It falls just below the knee, the hood is deep enough to actually pull up, and every edge — front, hem, cuffs, hood opening and pockets — is bound in one contrast strip that traces the whole silhouette in a single line.

Make it three ways: cut it straight from ready-quilted fabric; sew diagonal strips directly onto wadding, piecing and quilting in one step; or make the look in our photos — log cabin blocks joined with a light lattice and set on point, so the lattice draws diagonal lines across the coat.

✂️ FABRIC & NOTIONS
– Ready-quilted fabric, boiled wool or wool coating — or quilting cottons for patchwork: 13–17 fat quarters for strips; for log cabin 24–26 fat quarters, 2.6–2.9 m of light lattice fabric and 3.6–4.3 m of cotton muslin
– Thin low-loft wadding (80/20) for the patchwork versions
– Lining: cotton lawn or poplin (same amount as the main fabric)
– Main fabric: 2.0–3.1 m of 147 cm / 58" fabric, or 2.9–3.7 m of 112 cm / 44", depending on size
– Contrast binding: 7.4–8.2 m, cut on the bias from 0.5–0.6 m of fabric
